History of Shinsekai--- The Second-generation Tsutenkaku Tower

On 28 October 1956, the second-generation Tsutenkaku Tower was opened to the public.

Officially completed on 26 October, a large photo was taken using 20,000 photo flash lamps. The new tower has many more attractions than the first-generation tower did ( come and see for yourself). It is much taller as well.

Shinsekai was very popular during the heyday of the Japanese movie business as there were a number of cinemas catering for first-run films by all of the Japanese movie companies as well as for foreign movies. With many people coming to these cinemas, Shinsekai became a movie town as well.

But this time was short-lived. As more homes bought TV, fewer people came to the cinemas. Shinsekai was no more the attraction for everyone.

1969
Subway Sakaisuji Line was completed. ( Midosuji Line had been partly operational as early as in 1933 and was already almost fully operational as it is now in 1951. )
1970
The Expo '70 in Osaka was a huge success and a great number of International visitors came to visit Shinsekai.
1987
The Tennoji Fair opened here, but was not as good for Shinsekai as in the Expo '70 was. Tennoji Park was reconstructed and reopened at the site of the Fair.
1995
The Great Hanshin Earthquake.
1996-1999
A great renewal of Shonsekai. Two of the shopping streets were newly arcaded. The coloured pavement of all the streets was renewed.
Oct. 1996-Apr.1997
A popular TV drama set in Shinsekai suddenly made the area known all over Japan. More visitors came to Shinsekai to see the video taking of the drama as it was done here for most of the time.
1997
Festival Gate Amusement Park and Spa World Public Bath were opened. These urban amusement complexes were built where there used to be a streetcar depot. As when the first-generation Tsutenkaku was first built, Shinsekai again became a great place for families to enjoy spending a full day at.
March 2000
The Shinsekai website opened. The young generation of shop owners began building new Shinsekai for the new century.
