  Isshin-ji Temple

Isshin-ji Temple can be found by going little to the west from Shitenno-ji Temple.

This temple was built by Shitenno-ji bonze as a residence in 1185. It is famous as a temple to lay ashes to rest, and popular for the Bone Statues made by laid remains. This temple is renowned for its responsiveness to the prayers to stop drinking. The " Isshin-ji Theatre " etc., familiarized this temple as being a wonder-working.

In 1615, during the Osaka Summer Battle, Shogun Ieyasu changed the main camp from this temple to Mt. Chausu yama, and finally captured Osaka Castle. This is the weii-known history relating with this temple.

Battle fires burnt down some areas, where Ieyasu worked out strategies. At the end of the violent battle, with Sanada Nobushige ( brother of Yukimura ), the war-dead were heaped together around this temple.

When the temple was reconstructed, remains were dedicated from all over Japan as a temple to lay ashes to rest. With these remains, the Kotsu-Botoke ; Bone Statues, are made every ten years and installed in a charnel house.
